The invisible infrastructure powering the future of cultural heritage

When you walk through a museum, stand in front of a centuries-old painting, or listen to a piece of ancient music brought back to life - infrastructure is probably the last thing on your mind. And that’s exactly the point.
We tend to think of culture as something deeply human. Emotional. Tangible. The opposite of servers and data centers. But as cultural experiences become more immersive - virtual, interactive, multi-sensory - there’s a powerful, invisible world running underneath them. One that most people never think about.
That world is cloud infrastructure. And it plays a bigger role than you’d ever imagine.
The experience you see, and the engine you don’t
The ELLIE project is a Horizon Europe initiative building the next generation of cultural heritage experiences. Think Virtual Reality environments that place you inside a historical site, AI systems that adapt in real time to how you move and interact, or Internet of Senses technology that goes beyond sight and sound. These aren’t passive exhibits - they’re living, breathing digital experiences.

But none of that works without a serious IT backbone. Every VR environment needs to be rendered and delivered. Every AI interaction requires real-time processing. Every 3D asset, motion capture recording, and user data point needs to be stored, secured, and retrieved in milliseconds. When the experience feels seamless and magical, it’s because somewhere behind it, infrastructure is doing exactly what it should - working without anyone noticing.
That’s where Gcore comes in.
The invisible backbone of ELLIE
Gcore is one of the technology partners powering ELLIE’s infrastructure. It’s not the part of the project that will make headlines or appear in a demo reel. But without it, the demos don’t run.
Specifically, Gcore brings three pillars to the project:
Cloud infrastructure that hosts and scales ELLIE’s services — so as the project grows, adds users, and expands across new environments, it doesn’t buckle under its own weight.
Secure storage for the enormous volumes of data ELLIE generates — from immersive 3D assets to real-time interaction logs — kept secure, accessible, and fast enough to support live experiences.
Edge AI inference, which means AI processing happens closer to the user rather than routing everything through a distant central server. The result? Less delay, more responsiveness, and interactions that feel immediate.

Why this matters
Gcore’s role in ELLIE may not always be visible to end users, but it is fundamental to the project’s success. By providing cloud infrastructure, storage capabilities, and edge AI services, Gcore enables the seamless delivery of complex, multi-sensory experiences — ensuring that performance, scalability, and responsiveness remain at the highest levels.
